Samhain

Samhain is a Gaelic festival marking the turn into winter when we are invited to sit with our ancestors, and with our grief.  It was an honour to hold space for others to connect with their ancestors, the seasons and grief. In southern hemisphere settler colonies, our seasonal celebrations are all upside down and lack meaning so it felt really nourishing to honour this occasion that my many Gaelic ancestors would have celebrated for many generations.  It’s still a miss match as it had been 27 degrees in the week leading up.
Part of what I grieve is the loss of the First Nations’ seasonal celebrations here.  But, celebrating Samhain, I did feel deep connection to nature, and to place.

The ritual was held at the experimental space Extrasensory. https://www.extrasensory.com.au/
