Transition Ritual

Penny asked me to create a transition ritual for her as she turned 50.  We consulted about what she hoped for in the years to come, and what she wanted to let go of.  She spoke of baptism as a ritual that appealed to her and so a spring-fed dam on the property became the site of the ritual.  Penny stripped off, shedding the shame she felt she’d been letting go of for a long time.  This was an intense and tearful moment which we held with reverence and support.  With time she zipped down a slippery slide into the dam.  Upon this cleansing, I placed on her head a handmade eucalyptus crown I had made, symbolising the leadership she is growing further into.  The ritual was open enough that participants were able to join in and create steps along the way, offering an archway for Penny to slide under and at the end, all stripping naked themselves.

The ritual was commissioned by Penny Van Der Sluys, as part of Penfest 2026. https://pennyvandersluys.com/
